What’s Included in Professional Tax Preparation – And What Happens If the IRS Follows Up?
At Northern Business Solutions, we take pride in offering thorough, professional tax preparation designed to help you file accurately, take advantage of every available credit and deduction, and remain compliant with all federal and state tax laws. But sometimes, even with a perfectly filed return, the IRS may still send a notice asking for additional information.
This can happen for a variety of reasons—especially with certain high-value credits like the electric vehicle credit or the residential clean energy credit for solar installations, where the IRS has increased its scrutiny in recent years due to widespread fraud. While these notices are not common, they do happen from time to time and can understandably cause concern.
What’s Included in Tax Prep?
When you engage us to prepare your taxes, our service includes:
- Preparing and electronically filing your federal and state tax returns
- Applying all eligible credits and deductions
- Providing you with a copy of your returns for your records
- Answering general follow-up questions related to your filing
When Is There an Additional Fee?
If you receive an IRS or state notice that requires us to prepare a formal response on your behalf—such as writing a letter, compiling additional documentation, and mailing a certified reply—this would be outside the standard scope of tax preparation. In these cases, we’re more than happy to assist, but this would be treated as a separate engagement.
We always aim to keep things transparent, and we’ll go over the fee and process with you before beginning any additional work. In most cases, we charge a flat rate and defer payment until the credit or refund in question has been issued, whenever possible.
That said, if the issue turns out to be the result of an error or omission on our part, we will absolutely handle it at no additional charge.
Our Commitment to You
Even though these situations are rare, know that if something like this ever comes up, you’re not on your own. We’re here to support you and guide you through it professionally, thoroughly, and as stress-free as possible.
If you’ve received a notice and aren’t sure what to do next, just give us a call—we’re happy to take a look and walk you through the next steps.
